Overview of the Ṭarīqa

الطريقة الجعفريّة

The Jaʿfarī Ṭarīqa is a path of spiritual purification rooted in the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the inheritance of the gnostics. It is a way of remembrance, companionship and return to the Prophetic character — taken in the company of a guide and a community of seekers.

Founded by Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Jaʿfarī upon the way of his Shaykh, Sayyidī Shaykh Aḥmad ibn Idrīs, the path is characterised by its devotion to knowledge, the Qur'an, love of the Prophet ﷺ and his family, and the bonds of brotherhood among the seekers.

الطريقة المحمدية

The Jaʿfarī Ṭarīqa is, at its heart, a Muhammadiyya path — a way centred upon reviving the Prophetic character within the seeker. By imitation and by love, the seeker endeavours to become a mirror of the Beloved ﷺ.

Praise of the Prophet ﷺ features heavily in the way of the Shaykh, whose collections of poetry in his praise are famous. The Prophet ﷺ is the focal point of the journey.

Taking the Ṭarīqa

Taking the Ṭarīqa

أخذ الطريقة

Entering the path is taken through the hand of an authorised guide — one who holds the licence to grant the wird and to accompany the seeker upon the way. The seeker gives a pledge (bayʿa) and receives a daily wird of remembrance.

There is no barrier to taking the Ṭarīqa save a sincere intention. One may begin by attending the gatherings, keeping the company, and requesting the wird from the guide when ready.

أذكار الطريقة

Dhikr is the nourishment of the heart — the means by which the seeker keeps company with the Divine. The adhkār of the Jaʿfarī Ṭarīqa are drawn from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, gathered and arranged by the Shaykh for the daily practice of the seeker.

They include the morning and evening remembrances, the adhkār after the prayer, and the specific litanies given as the wird.

Daily Litanies

الأوراد

The daily litanies — the awrād — are the backbone of the seeker's practice. Each is a fixed portion of remembrance, recited at appointed times, given by the guide according to the state of the seeker.

The awrād of the Jaʿfarī Ṭarīqa include the litanies composed by Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Jaʿfarī, gathered in the Majmūʿa al-Jaʿfariyya.

Al-Ṣalawāt al-Jaʿfariyya

الصلوات على النبي ﷺ

Prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ — the ṣalawāt — hold a central place in the Jaʿfarī way. The Shaykh composed numerous ṣalawāt, gathered and recited by the seekers.

They are recited in the daily litanies, in the gatherings, and upon every fitting occasion.

Special Prayers

الأدعية

Alongside the litanies and the ṣalawāt, the Shaykh taught supplications for the needs of the seeker — duʿāʾ for provision, for ease, for protection, and for the affairs of this world and the next.

These special prayers are drawn from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and from the inheritance of the gnostics.
