Conditions for Entering the Path

Whoever wishes to enter the path of our master Imām Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Jaʿfarī—may Allah be pleased with him—must first commit to regularly attending the Jaʿfarī ḥaḍrah (spiritual gathering) every Sunday night and Thursday night, so that he may become accustomed to its order and etiquette and learn the structure and manners of the brethren in remembrance (dhikr).*

We require this period so that the aspirant may mix with the murīdīn (disciples) and become known among them before pledging allegiance (ʿahd). This period is a time of testing, no one is admitted to the path without it, so that only those whose hearts show signs of divine love may enter. When the aspirant displays signs of love, humility, sincerity, and truthfulness, he is then permitted to take the pledge of allegiance (ʿahd).

This rule applies to all children (students) of Imām al-Jaʿfarī. No one may join them unless his intentions are pure, free from worldly motives, self-interest, or any ignoble aim.

Likewise, no one may remain among them who abandons obedience, neglects responsibilities, or fails in sincerity and discipline. One who disregards his duties to his parents, or leaves his lawful work and livelihood, does not belong among us. For our path does not accept those who live in idleness or deceit, nor those who earn unlawfully or engage in hypocrisy.

Our way is the way of the righteous predecessors (al-salaf al-ṣāliḥ)—founded upon the Qur’an and the Sunnah and the straight Sharīʿah, following the guidance of those whose spiritual chains (asānīd) trace back unbroken to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Our path is firmly established upon the Book and the Sunnah, our Shaykh and founder being Imām Ṣāliḥ al-Jaʿfarī, may Allah be pleased with him. Our jurisprudence follows Imām Mālik,
our creed follows Imām al-Ashʿarī, and our spiritual practice is like sweet, healing honey.

Our litanies are treasures,
our gatherings are gardens of purity,
and our words are lamps of divine light.

We offer them like fragrant honeycombs,
within which lies healing for hearts and souls.
So spread them among the servants of Allah,
for they are a never-ending fountain of grace.

It is essential for every true lover on this path to attain realization in the following key principles:

    1. Uprightness (Istiqāmah)
Steadfastness upon the Divine Law of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; for whoever does not live uprightly cannot reach the station of iḥsān (spiritual excellence), and whoever has weak faith and little adherence to Islam cannot seek such perfection.
    2. Have appropriate level of his obedience to his shaykh and responsiveness to his advice.
    3. His Relationship with His Family and Relatives
He must maintain good relations with his parents and family, and treat them kindly and compassionately. For there is no goodness in one who is not good to his family. No one who is disobedient or neglectful toward his parents can hope for a good relationship with his Shaykh. Whoever cuts off his kinship ties will not attain the spiritual rank of obedience and nearness.
    4. His Means of Livelihood
He must earn his sustenance from lawful (ḥalāl) means. The disciple should never live in dependency or idleness. He must avoid all dishonesty and laziness, for the Shaykh used to say: “One who does not strive for his livelihood is not among us.”
    5. His Appearance and Demeanor
He must preserve his dignity, maintain a clean and honorable appearance, for outward composure reflects inner truth, as the outer form mirrors the inner essence, and through it, one’s spiritual state becomes known. This is what we advise by Allah’s guidance and Allah is the One who grants success. He is our Guardian and our Best Trustee.

* – there is an obvious exception for seekers who do not live near a Ja’fari gathering. Though online gatherings are hosted Sunday afternoon\evening depending on time zone.
