Changing Attributes

“The person doesn’t change by taking the tariqa, the only thing that changes is his attributes. Meaning his [literal] hearing, sight, and smell doesn’t change rather what changes is the attributes of these things. The attributes of his physical senses change by taking the tariqa. So, his hearing turns away from frivolity and he begins to love listening to the Quran. His sight itself doesn’t change but its attribute changes. He dislikes seeing the haram and he begins to take pleasure in seeing the halal and looking at the righteous. Smelling, itself, doesn’t change but its attributes change such that he hates filth and the scent of alcohol and other intoxicants and loves good scents and the scent of the righteous, because it reminds him of the fragrances of Paradise. Like this, the tariqa trains the tastes with new attributes that it was not familiar with before, thus, the taste itself doesn’t change but its attributes change.”[1]
